Circle Passing Drills

Set Up: Players line up around the face off circles
Descriptions:
Drill #1: Stationary passing
Focus: “Sweep” the puck vs slapping. Players should also point toe of the blade towards the target. The receiving player must also be stressed to be prepared in a hockey ready position with their stick on the ice.
Drill #2: Pass and Replace
Focus: Players must continue to make proper passes then immediately sprint to the player who was just passed the puck. The receiving player must make a successful pass to another player then replace his spot by sprinting to it.
Drill #3: Keep Away
Focus: One player will be in the middle and can move around with a goal to intercept passes. Other players must be lined up along the circle and can not move. They will attempt to make as many successful passes without the “monkey in the middle” intercepting them. If the pass is intercepted or not successful one of the players on the circle becomes the “monkey”.

NAME: 3 Lane Shooting
SET UP: 2 lines in diagonal corners w/pucks. Goalies in nets.
DESCRIPTION: P1 skates the circle, skates down the wall and shoots from near boards. P2 skates the circle, skates 1/2 the center circle and shoots from the center lane. P3 skates the near circle, skates the circle in the opposite corner, performs a tight turn at the blue line then red line and shoots from the far lane. After P3 skates past, the players in the other end start.
DETAILS: Players must keep their feet moving through the turns while carrying the puck. Make sure they shoot from their lane and do not attempt to deke the goalie. Players should also be stressed to stop in front of the net after shooting for rebounds. This is a good drill goalies to work on lateral movements seeing shots from all 3 lanes.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS: Goalies: work on staying square to each shot. Skaters: keep feet moving up until moment of releasing the shot, keep head up

NAME: 1 on 1 Howe
SET UP: D starts in the center circle w/pucks. FW starts on the hash marks near the boards.
DESCRIPTION: This drill starts on the whistle. Both Ds makes passes to the FWs in the corner and immediately skate BW around half of the circle. D accepts the FW from the opposite corner for a 1 on 1
DETAILS: D must work to gain position for opposite FW. FW must wait to receive the puck before sprinting down the wall to try and beat opposite D.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS: This is a good drill to teach young defensemen to protect the middle of the ice using his stick during the 1 on 1. This drill is also good for defensemen's quickness while skating around half of the circle. F should be stressed gain as much speed as possible after puck possession.

Summer Elite Training Program
We have developed a summer program designed for improving hockey players' skating and skills through on and off-ice elite level training. Players will have 1 hour of on-ice training followed by 1 hour of off-ice training. The on-ice training will have a main focus on proper skating techniques. These basic skating techniques will be continually reinforced every time the player steps on the ice. “In order for a player to form a proper habit or change a bad habit, that player must practice the proper form for hundreds or even thousands of repetitions.” The players will be trained in developing power and explosiveness while skating straight, through turns, from a dead stop and with and without the puck. We will incorporate other hockey skills such as shooting and puck control. Players will be more confident for the upcoming season.
The off-ice training will consist of hockey skills such as shooting/stride board technique and functional athletic movements. Body weight exercises will also be incorporated. Developing proper off-ice training habits can benefit athletes for years.
"I have trained for upcoming hockey seasons for 20+ years at high levels and realize the value in proper training. On and off-ice training should simulate and sometimes exceed the pace or intensity of a mid-season or playoff game. Players that are prepared have a distinct advantage with other players when the season starts. Our coaches have playing experience that can be passed along to the young hockey player in a positive, disciplined and energetic manner."
-Chris Tamer
